If you've been struggling with unexplained bloating, persistent fatigue, skin flare-ups, or digestive discomfort, you might have wondered whether a food intolerance could be behind it. Booking a test can feel like a big step — especially if you're not sure what it actually involves. So here's a plain-English, honest guide to exactly what happens when you come to Health Sense for a food intolerance test.
Before You Arrive
There's very little preparation required. Fast for one hour before arriving, and make sure you've drank plenty of water. Thats it!, Simply come as you are. If you have any existing health conditions, are pregnant, or are currently taking medication, just let me know when you book — I'll be happy to answer any questions beforehand.
Health Sense is based at Magnolia House in Norton, Suffolk, just a short drive from Bury St Edmunds. Appointments are relaxed and unhurried, and most people tell me they feel at ease very quickly.
The Welcome and Initial Chat
We start every session with a conversation. I'll ask you about your main symptoms, how long you've been experiencing them, your diet, your lifestyle, and anything else that might be relevant. This context is really important — your symptoms don't exist in isolation, and understanding the full picture helps me interpret your results far more meaningfully.
There are no silly questions and no judgement. Many of my clients have spent years being told their symptoms are "just IBS" or "stress-related" — this appointment is a space where you'll genuinely be listened to.
The Testing Itself — No Needles, No Stress
The test uses a method called bio-energetic or electro-dermal testing. I know that might sound technical, but the experience itself is very simple and completely painless. You'll hold a small hand electrode while a gentle, low-level electrical current is used to measure how your body responds to different substances.
During the session, I test over 200 potential stressors, including:
Foods and drinks (gluten, dairy, eggs, nightshades, citrus, nuts, and many more)
Food additives and preservatives
Environmental factors (pollens, dust, moulds)
Heavy metals and chemicals
Nutrient deficiencies
Supplement compatibility
Bacterial and microbial imbalances
The whole testing process takes around an hour and you're seated comfortably throughout. Many clients find it fascinating to see their results build up in real time.
Understanding Your Results
Once the testing is complete, I walk you through your results clearly and in plain English — no confusing medical jargon. We'll look at which foods or substances showed a stress response, what that might mean for your symptoms, and what the priority areas are for you to address first.
It's worth saying that a response to a food doesn't necessarily mean you need to eliminate it forever. Sometimes the body is reacting because of a temporary imbalance, a gut issue, or an inflammatory state. Understanding the why is just as important as the what, and I'll explain this as we go.
Your Personalised Action Plan
You won't leave with a list of foods to avoid and nothing else. You'll receive a written summary of your results plus a personalised guide with practical, realistic steps to start feeling better.
This might include dietary adjustments, supplement recommendations, lifestyle suggestions, and guidance on what to try first.
I aim to make every recommendation achievable. There's no point in a plan you can't stick to.
After Your Appointment
Many clients start noticing improvements within 2–4 weeks of making the suggested changes. Some see results even sooner.
Follow-up appointments are available if you'd like ongoing support as your body adjusts, and I'm always happy to answer questions by email as you put your plan into practice.
The whole session — consultation, testing, results, and action plan — takes around one hour. The cost is £100.
Is It Right for You?
A food intolerance test at Health Sense is ideal if you're dealing with ongoing symptoms that don't seem to have a clear cause, if you've tried elimination diets without success, or if you simply want a clearer picture of how your body is responding to what you eat.
It's also suitable for most children over the age of around 3–4 who are eating a varied diet.
You don't need a GP referral — you can book directly online or by calling 07834 351 139.
